3. ACAAI endorses Boston Scientific’s Alair asthma treatment
Boston Scientific said that the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology has endorsed bronchial thermoplasty using the company’s Alair system.
The ACAAI recommends the procedure for patients with severe asthma who continue to present symptoms despite maximum medication treatment, Marlborough, Mass.-based Boston Scientific said. Read more
2. Smith & Nephew buys Russian ortho biz DeOst
Smith & Nephew said that it acquired Russia’s DeOst group, which makes and distributes trauma and orthopedic devices, for an undisclosed amount.
DeOst has distributed the British healthcare giant’s products in Russia since 2009, Smith & Nephew said. Read more
1. Medicare proposes bundled hip, knee payments
Medicare proposed to bundle reimbursement payments for hip and knee replacement procedures, saying it wants to “hold hospitals accountable for the quality of care they deliver to Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries.”
The Centers for Medicare &l Medicaid Services said its 5-year “Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement” program would involve more than 800 hospitals in 75 geographic areas, bundling payments for hip and knee replacements from hospital admission to 90 days after discharge. The payment would cover “all related items and services paid under Medicare Part A and Part B for all Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries,” the government health insurer said. Read more
