Nitinol medical tech developer BioMedical Enterprises said today it launched the Elite nitinol bone fixation system in the U.S.
The Elite nitinol bone fixation system includes a plate-like implant design that comes in 2 and 4-leg low-profile configurations, and in multiple sizes, San Antonio-based BioMedical Enterprises said. The system comes with a pre-loaded Zero-Torque insertion tool, the company said.
“Working with our surgeon advisors, we compared the BME Elite implants to a competitive titanium compression plate with and without a lag screw. We saw greater compression and contact area than the plate, along with similar rigidity and torsional stability in simulated small bone applications. This is truly a breakthrough technology. This launch is the first of several different BME Elite implant configurations that will ultimately be part of the complete BME Elite system. Our primary goal, with all our new product launches, is to continue to provide the physician community with products that improve their practice and outcomes for their patients,” CEO Keith Peeples said in prepared remarks.
The company said the system features fixation recovery technology to allow the implants to maintain compression through repetitive loading, which it claims is a “significantly easier and faster technique” to make the system an alternative to traditional fixation.
“The BME Elite system is easy to use, and with the higher levels of continuous compression, there appears to be earlier and more consistent trabecular bone formation at the fusion sites,” Dr. Bryan Den Hartog of the University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics said in prepared remarks.
