BD launches Genesis low-temp sterilization containers

Becton DickinsonBecton Dickinson & Co. (NYSE:BDX) said today it launched its Genesis low temperature rigid sterilization container system designed for surgical instrument sterilization.

The Genesis container system is validated for low-temperature sterilization processes and systems from sterilizer manufacturers, Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based BD said.

“Our new containers have the same trusted functionality that our customers in the sterile processing department have come to expect, but they have been validated for today’s latest low-temperature processes. We will continue to extend our leadership in sterilization containers and surgical instrumentation through innovations that positively impact both clinical and financial outcomes,” infection prevention GM Jim Leitl said in a press release.

Low temperature sterilization is a fast-growing trend in sterile processing and is used for instrumentation that cannot handle the high-temperature and moisture present in traditional steam sterilization procedures, BD said.

The company said it plans on making the containers available later this spring.

In March, Becton Dickinson said it inked a deal to sell a 50.1% stake in its respiratory business to private equity giant Apax Partners for an undisclosed amount, forming a joint venture to operate the unit as a stand-alone company.

The new entity will take BD’s ventilation, respiratory diagnostics, vital signs and AirLife businesses on board. The deal values the 5,000-worker respiratory business at $500 million; it’s expected to post annual sales of roughly $900 million, the companies said.
