Baxter touts high compliance rate with use of Sigma Spectrum infusion systems

BaxterBaxter (NYSE:BAX) today touted compliance data from facilities equipped with its Sigma Spectrum Infusion pump system, citing an overall average of 97% drug library compliance during the 1st 30 days of implementation.

Smart pump drug libraries are designed to aid clinicians in identifying mistakes before they harm patients by allowing them to choose from a curated list of medications and fluids within medically appropriate dose ranges, the Deerfield, Ill.-based company said.

If programming goes beyond specified limits, smart infusion pups are designed to alert clinicians before medication is administered.

Baxter’s Sigma Spectrum system is designed to automatically default to the installed drug library when powered on to aid in compliance with every infusion in the drug library, which can be updated wirelessly. Infusion records can also be automatically documented in patient’s electronic medical records.

“Our highest priority when choosing a new infusion pump was achieving our drug library compliance goals, which is essential to patient safety. Industry-wide drug library compliance is at approximately 85 percent, but our facility—following the adoption of Sigma Spectrum and automatic drug library updates—is at a 99.3% compliance rate,” Dennis Killian of Salisbury, Md.’s Peninsula Regional Medical Center, who implemented the Sigma Spectrum system at the facility, said in a press release.

The company said its Sigma Spectrum system is the only pump to feature buit-in dose/rate change error prevention features to protect high-risk unfions when pharmacists customize dose change limits for individual drugs.

Baxter won FDA clearance for its next-generation Sigma Spectrum infusion pump with safety software that allows hospitals to set drug delivery parameters to minimize dosing errors back in May 2014.
