5. Cartiva wins PMA for big toe synthetic cartilage implant

Cartiva said today that it won pre-market approval from the FDA for an implant designed to treat arthritis in the big toe.

Alpharetta, Ga.-based Cartiva said the device is the 1st synthetic cartilage implant approved for the U.S. market. It’s meant as an alternative to the standard of care, a fusion procedure using screws and plates. The Cartiva SCI is made of a biocompatible polymer with similar physical properties to human cartilage. Read more


4. Amedica prices $11m offering

Amedica said today that it priced a stock offering worth $11 million for the silicon nitride implants it makes.

Salt Lake City, Utah-based Amedica said it plans to float more than 3.6 million shares of common stock at $1 apiece, plus nearly 7,400 preferred shares at $1,000 each, and 11 million warrants. Read more


3. Medtronic warns on wire fracture risk with Activa DBS devices

Medtronic last month cautioned surgeons to be careful not to implant its Activa deep-brain stimulation devices with sharply bent or kinked wires, after receiving reports of wire fracture.

In a June letter to physicians, Fridley, Minn.-based Medtronic said it learned of 16 instances of high impedance measurements that were later found to be caused by wire fractures. The fractures, in adaptor wires connected to pocket adaptors for the Activa PC and Activa RC devices. Read more


2. NuVasive closes $98m Biotronic NeuroNetwork buyout

NuVasive Inc. said today that it closed the $98 million acquisition of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring service provider Biotronic NeuroNetwork.

Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Biotronic NeuroNetwork provides neurophysiological monitoring services to surgeons and healthcare facilities in the U.S., as well as remote physician oversight. The company supports more than 45,000 surgeries annually at more than 650 hospitals, NuVasive said. Read more


1. Abbott wins FDA nod for Absorb stent

MassDevice.com news

Abbott said today it won FDA premarket approval for its Absorb bioresorbable everolimus eluting heart stent, touting it as the 1st fully dissolving stent approved for treating coronary artery disease.

The newly cleared stent is designed to dissolve completely after approximately 3 years after serving to keep clogged arteries open and promote healing in the treated artery segment, Abbott said. Read more
