Medtronic puts $1m into National Patient Safety Foundation

The National Patient Safety Foundation’s think tank, the NPSF Lucian Leape Institute, said today it received a $1 million grant from Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) to support the institute’s goals of improving patient safety.

The grant is set to be distributed over 3 years, and was announced at the Annual NPSF Lucian Leape Institute forum & keynote dinner last week in Boston.

“The NPSF Lucian Leape Institute is composed of the most distinguished leaders in the patient safety field. We are pleased to help enhance the Institute’s work to improve patient care and safety and support the role of the health care workforce in delivering the safest care,” senior veep Steve Blazejewski said in a press release.

The grant from Fridley, Minn.-based is the 1st unrestricted funding for the Institute, with members slated to determine which initiatives the financing will support.

“We are extremely pleased that Medtronic has chosen to so generously support the Institute’s work. This grant will be enormously helpful in ensuring that the Institute can continue its mission of providing the strategic vision for improving patient safety,” NPSF president & CEO Dr. Tejal Gandhi said in a prepared statement.

Founded in 2010, the NPSF Lucian Leape Institute set out to investigate “critical concepts for transforming the safety of the health care system,” the foundation said. The group has covered issues in transparency in health care, patient and family engagement, engaging the health care workforce and improving safety, integrating care and reforming medical education.

Future plans include a focus on improved measures of patient safety metrics, greater patient and family engagement in health care and greater awareness of patient safety issues among the general public, the Institute said.
