Zimmer-Biomet launches VSR rotator cuff implant

Zimmer BiometZimmer Biomet (NYSE:ZBH) said today it launched its Comprehensive Vault Reconstruction System, a patient-matched glenoid implant.

The newly launched device is designed to treat patients with severely deficient rotator cuff and extensive bone loss which precludes the use of standard glenoid baseplates, the Warsaw, Ind.-based company said.

“The treatment options for extensive glenoid deficiencies were limited to bone grafting or hemi-arthroplasties, both of which were unreliable and had marginal success. The Comprehensive Vault Reconstruction System represents an important advance in shoulder reconstruction by streamlining and personalizing the implant procedure in hope of more predictable outcomes and results that extend beyond pain relief, to restoring function and improving overall quality of life,” Dr. David Dines of Weill Cornell Medical College said in prepared remarks.

The reconstruction system is designed to use CT imaging and advanced 3D reconstruction techniques to allow surgeons to personalize the implant. The 1st implantation of the device took place on September 21 and Charlottesville, Va.’s University of Virginia Hospital by Dr. Stephen Brockmeier, the company said.

“The Comprehensive Vault Reconstruction System is another example of our commitment to addressing the clinical and unmet needs of shoulder specialists. This innovative, patient-specific implant, coupled with extensive pre-operative planning software, will expand viable treatment options for patients with severe glenoid deformities,” global extremities biz GM Orsa Britton said in a press release.

In late October, Zimmer Biomet said it inked an exclusive global distribution agreement with Nextremity Solutions for its foot and ankle deformity correction products. Financial terms of the transaction were not released.

The deal will position Warsaw, Ind.-based Zimmer Biomet to distribute Nextremity Solutions’ Nextra hammertoe correction system, MSP metatarsal shortening system, Re+Line bunion correction system and Arcus stable system globally.
