Inside the largest medical acquisition in history

Trust between Medtronic and Covidien officials helped them overcome the political blowback from the two companies’ $50 billion merger of equals, which moved Medtronic’s official headquarters from Minnesota to Ireland. 

That was a major takeaway when Brett Wall, former president of Covidien and current president of the neurovascular business at Medtronic, interviewed Geoff Martha, who led Medtronic’s team for the deal, at OCTANe’s Medical Investor Forum, held in Irvine, Calif., Oct. 27-28. 

Back in 2014, Medtronic was three years into the leadership of Omar Ishrak and looking at what was coming down the pipeline, Martha explained. There were enough problems in the healthcare space – particularly when it came to costs and meeting the needs of providers, payers and government – that Medtronic leaders felt they couldn’t solve them with the company as it was.
