Si-Bone launches iFuse warranty program

Si-BoneSi-Bone said today it launched an iFuse warranty program which will supply patients with a free iFuse Implant to supplement or replace previously placed iFuse implants within a year if revision surgery is required.

The iFuse implant system is a triangular shaped minimally invasive surgical device designed for spinal fusion procedures to treat certain disorders of the sacroiliac joint, the San Jose, Calif.-based company said.

“Reducing revision surgeries and associated hospital readmissions is becoming increasingly important as hospitals gravitate toward ‘pay for performance’ reimbursement models. The iFuse warranty program is a great example of how leading companies like SI-BONE can partner with health care providers to lower costs and share risks associated with patient care,” Dr. Peter Whang of the Yale University School of Medicine said in prepared remarks.

The warranty program will also provide a 1-time credit towards an iFuse implant for future use for patients who require any revision procedure within the 1-year warranty period that does not require a supplemental or replacement iFuse implant, Si-Bone said.

“This is a ground-breaking warranty within our industry, which is based on the integrity of our product and focused on actual patient outcomes. Our warranty illustrates the confidence we have in our product and procedure based on the almost 50 positive iFuse clinical publications, extensive practical experience of nearly 24,000 iFuse surgeries and our industry-leading medical education and field teams.  When I meet with providers, there is a common interest expressed in that hospitals and payors don’t want to pay for competitive products when they have no idea what the results, revision rates or durability will be. Our warranty further demonstrates our uncompromising commitment to these health care providers and their patients,” CEO Jeffrey Dunn said in a press release.

In September, Si-Bone said that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska updated its medical policy to provide coverage for minimally invasive SI joint fusion procedures.

The move makes BCBS of Nebraska the 2nd BCBS plan, following BCBS of Michigan, to approve a positive coverage policy for MIS SI joint fusion procedures, Si-Bone said.

The policy change came based on published clinical literature, Si-Bone said, which validated fusion and stabilization procedures of the sacroiliac joint for treating back pain. The company said that references cited in the new policy included studies specific to the company’s iFuse device.
