DoD taps BD’s Pyxis for $100m medication dispensing contract

DoD taps BD's Pyxis for $100m medication dispensing contractBecton Dickinson & Co. (NYSE:BDX) said today that it won a $100 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense for its Pyxis ES system.

According to the contract, Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based BD will provide its medication dispensing technology to 115 military inpatient health facilities and military inpatient pharmacies.

“Through this collaboration with the DoD, we have the opportunity to help modernize the DHA’s medication management and dispensing systems across all of the organization’s facilities in the United States, Asia and Europe,” global president of medication management Ranjeet Banerjee said in prepared remarks. “We are honored to expand our longstanding partnership with the organization, to both upgrade existing legacy Pyxis sites to an enterprise-wide solution, as well as expand our footprint across all DHA facilities.”

The Pyxis ES Automated Dispensing Cabinet features secure medication storage and automated system administration to track and manage medications, according to BD. The technology also provides data analytics and reporting, as well as integration capabilities.

BD plans to provide the military facilities with its Pyxis Enterprise Server, MedStation ES sytem, Smart Cubie technology and its integrated analytics tools, according to the newly-inked contract.

In January this year, BD won expanded FDA 510(k) clearance for its PleurX catheter system.

The catheter system is now cleared for use in treating non-malignant recurrent pleural effusions etiologies, including congestive heart failure and cardiogenic effusions.

The PleurX catheter is designed to drain pleural fluid that accumulates in the pleural cavity surrounding the lungs and causes shortness of breath. The device, which won initial approval in 1997, can be used in at-home settings, according to BD.
