Medical Technology Venture Partners reported raising $20 million for its maiden $50 million fund.
The San Francisco-based VC shop said in a regulatory filing that it raised the cash from 20 unnamed investors. Read more
4. Appeals court upholds Medtronic win in $6m legal fees spat with Mirowski
The estate of Dr. Michel Mirowski, who helped invent the implantable defibrillator owes Medtronic $6 million to cover legal fees in their long-running patent spat, a federal appeals court ruled today.
Mirowski Family Ventures represents the estate of CRM pioneer Dr. Michel Mirowski. The group, which controls several patents related to ICDs and cardiac resynchronization therapy devices, has been pursuing patent infringement cases against Medtronic, Guidant and successor Boston Scientific for years. 3. Cook Medical warns of thrombus risk with Zenith Alpha stent graft
Cook Medical this month released an urgent safety notice warning of clot risks associated with its Zenith Alpha thoracic endovascular graft when used to treat blunt thoracic aortic injuries.
The company warned of a 25% observed rate of thrombus within the graft during follow-ups to a clinical trial evaluating the use of the device for treating BTAI, though none of the cases required an open surgical conversion or bypass. In past studies, the rate of thrombus within grafts ranges from 15% to 40%, the company said. Read more
2. Reva Medical wins CE Mark for Fantom bioresorbable scaffold
Reva Medical said yesterday that it won CE Mark approval in the European Union for its Fantom sirolimus-eluting bioresorbable coronary scaffold.
The Fantom scaffold is the San Diego, Calif.-based company’s 1st commercial product. Reva said it plans to begin selling the product in Europe this quarter. Read more
1. Report: Stryker Instruments lays off 50 in Michigan
A Stryker division in its home base of Kalamazoo, Mich., reportedly laid off about 50 workers, even as it’s planning a major expansion at another facility nearby.
Stryker Instruments, which last month won a tax break from Portage, Mich., for a $154 million, 485,000-square-foot R&D facility there, confirmed the layoffs in Kalamazoo last week to a local television station. Although the company would not specify how many positions would be cut, WWMT reported that “calls into our newsroom say about 50 people will lose their jobs.” Read more
