Medtronic launches StealthStation S8 neurosurgery navigator

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today it launched the next-gen S8 version of its StealthStation neurosurgical intraoperative imaging and navigation system

The StealthStation S8 includes upgrades to its software interface, a 2-cart platform design and electromagnetic technology, the Fridley, Minn.-based company said.

“Neuro-navigation and computer-based surgical guidance has become a standard part of neurosurgery practices today. The StealthStation helps me ensure complete resections as well as helps me minimize approach-related complications. I believe many neurosurgeons will be excited to see what the newest version of this technology will offer,” Dr. Colin Buchanan of Colorado’s The Medical Center of Aurora said in a prepared statement.

Medtronic said that improvements to the user interface have streamlined operation of the device, and that upgrades to the software are providing new tools which provide visualizations and data intraoperatively.

“The StealthStation S8 demonstrates Medtronic’s continued commitment to innovation, helping surgeons make critical decisions and enhancing the OR environment for all surgical staff. We look forward to seeing how this next generation of the Stealth system will contribute to the continued transformation of how neurosurgeons treat brain and spine disorders around the world,” Medtronic brain therapies division prez Brett Wall said in a press release.

Last September, Medtronic said it won FDA 510(k) clearance for updates to it’s StealthStation software designed to help plan the placement of the leads used for deep-brain stimulation therapy.

The company said the newly cleared StealthStation software is designed to work with its O-arm imaging system to integrate pre-operative planning and intraoperative imaging during DBS device implantations.
