As we mark another Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s worth noting the recent strides that have been made when it comes to diagnosing and treating the disease.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the U.S. Affecting one in eight women, breast cancer will be accountable for about 40,610 deaths this year, making it the second deadliest cancer in women – the first being lung cancer. About 252,710 new diagnoses are expected in 2017 alone, according to the American Cancer Society.

Despite the sense of urgency that comes from these grisly facts, there is still a seven in eight chance that a woman will not be diagnosed with breast cancer. And there are currently 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.

The well-known way of diagnosing breast cancer is a procedure called a mammogram. Women can also self-check for lumps at home before making an appointment with a doctor. Following a diagnosis, some women get a mastectomy and go through radiation treatment.

There are a number of ways people can help advance breast cancer research through a variety of charities, 5K runs and much more. Advancements in treatment and diagnoses couldn’t come soon enough.

Here are seven breakthroughs in breast cancer research that you should know.
