5. How exhaled breath can identify bacterial infections
Researchers at Radboud University have discovered a way to quickly detect bacterial infections using only exhaled breath.
Humans create ethylene, also known as a plant hormone, naturally as a result of oxidative stress caused by UV radiation and other things. The researchers discovered that ethylene is created when there is inflammation in the body and is quickly released when exhaling. The presence of ethylene in the breath can be a biomarker of bacterial infection, according to the researchers. Read more
4. Teleflex closes $1B NeoTract buy
Teleflex said today that it closed its $1.1 billion acquisition of NeoTract and its UroLift prostate treatment.
The deal called for an up-front cash payment of $725 million, plus another $375 million in milestone payments pegged to sales numbers through 2020, Wayne, Pa.-based Teleflex said. Read more
3. EnteroMedics acquires ReShape Medical in $38m cash-and-stock deal
EnteroMedics said today that it acquired ReShape Medical in a cash-and-stock deal worth about $38 million.
The deal called for St. Paul, Minn.-based EnteroMedics to pay $5 million in cash, plus 2.4 million shares of stock and nearly 188,000 series C convertible shares. At yesterday’s closing price of $1.79 per ETRM share, the stock shares would be worth about $4.2 million, with the convertible shares worth another $33.6 million after conversion to nearly 18.8 million shares; EnteroMedics said it plans to hold a shareholder vote by the end of the year to approve the series C conversion. 2. Integra LifeSciences completes purchase of J&J’s Codman Neurosurgery
Integra LifeSciences has completed its previously announced $1.045 billion purchase of Johnson & Johnson’s Codman Neurosurgery business, the companies announced today.
“The addition of Codman Neurosurgery expands our global leadership position by creating one of the broadest medical device portfolios in the neurosurgery market,” Peter Arduini, Integra’s president and CEO, said in a news release. Read more
1. Boston Scientific to acquire Apama Medical in deal worth up to $300
Boston Scientific said today it inked a deal worth up to $300 million to acquire Apama Medical and its radiofrequency balloon catheter system designed to treat atrial fibrillation.
The deal includes an initial $175 million in cash up-front from Marlborough, Mass.-based Boston Scientific and an additional $125 million in contingent payments between 2018 and 2020 based on clinical and regulatory milestones. Boston Scientific expects the acquisition to close the 4th quarter of 2017. Read more
