5. Judge: Nevro lawyer’s tactic ‘sleazy’ but legal in BSX patent spat
A federal judge in California found this week that although Nevro Corp.‘s failure to correct a patent examiner’s misunderstanding of prior art was a little “sleazy,” it does not account to inequitable conduct.
Boston Scientific argued that the prosecuting attorney had a duty to respond to the examiner’s confusion, which came about as part of an ongoing patent argument between the two companies. But federal judge Vince Chhabria ruled otherwise. Read more
4. Wright Medical inks $90m settlement deal for metal-on-metal hip claims
Wright Medical said this week it agreed on a comprehensive settlement deal to resolve remaining metal-on-metal hip claims not previously settled, looking to pay a maximum of $89.8 million.
A total of $35 million of the settlement will be funded from insurance proceeds, contingent on availability by Dec. 31, the Amsterdam-based company said. Read more
3. Philips to terminate remote servicing deal with Digirad
Digirad Corp. said this week that Royal Philips has decided to terminate a remote services contract with Digirad’s DMS Health Tech subsidiary, effective December 31.
The Poway, Calif.-based company said it is conducting an impairment review to evaluate the impact of the terminated contract, and that currently it “cannot make a reasonable estimate of any potential impairment under this event.” Read more
2. J&J touts perioperative efficiency CareAdvantage study data
Johnson & Johnson this week reported results from a real-world evidence study of its CareAdvantage program, touting improved tray set up time and reduced surgical tray numbers with an estimated $262,000 saved annually.
The data was presented at the Academic Orthopaedic Consortium’s annual meeting yesterday, the company said. Read more
1. Olympus launches joint Sony-developed Orbeye 4K-3D video microscope
Olympus said it launched its Orbeye 4K-3D video microscope developed by Sony Olympus Medical solutions, a joint venture between Olympus and Sony‘s Imaging Products & Solutions biz.
The company said the Orbeye microscope is designed to provide high-resolution 3D imaging of the structure of tissue, blood vessels and other features to enable more accurate surgery. The system includes a 55-inch display to allow for simultaneous surgical team viewing. Read more
