Olympus launches joint Sony-developed Orbeye 4K-3D video microscope

Olympus (TYO:7733) said today it launched its Orbeye 4K-3D video microscope developed by Sony Olympus Medical solutions, a joint venture between Olympus and Sony‘s (TYO:6758) Imaging Products & Solutions biz.

The company said the Orbeye microscope is designed to provide high-resolution 3D imaging of the structure of tissue, blood vessels and other features to enable more accurate surgery. The system includes a 55-inch display to allow for simultaneous surgical team viewing.

“The Orbeye exoscope represents the next generation of operative imaging- a true quantum shift. Its adoption is certain and will impact the use of loupe magnification as well as the current operating microscope. The ease of use, surgeon ergonomics and effects upon the operating team are revolutionary and I look forward to continuing to train and develop new strategies for its adoption,” Dr. David Langer, MD, Lenox Hill Hospital/Northwell Health. ”

Olympus touted that the system can reduce surgeon fatigue by reducing the amount of time practitioners would have to view the images through a microscope eyepiece. The new microscope is approximately 95% smaller in volume than the previous model and 50% lighter, the company added.

“We have already received resounding enthusiasm for our 4K and 3D technology for laparoscopy and endoscopy. We are pleased that through the development of Orbeye, this 4K-3D technology can be offered to more specialties such as neurosurgery, spine, microsurgery, ENT, and cardiac. We understood that with such complex and lengthy surgeries, the technology would have to be innovative and groundbreaking enough to entice surgeons to make a change, and we were pleased to work with Sony through our SOMED joint venture to meet the challenge,” Olympus America surgical division group VP Randy Clark said in a press release.

In April, Olympus said that its American subsidiary plans to acquire Image Stream Medical for an undisclosed amount.
