Masimo touts ORi obese patient arterial hemoglobin desaturation warning study results

Masimo (NSDQ:MASI) yesterday released results from a study of its Oxygen Reserve Index’s ability to function as an early warning of impending arterial hemoglobin desaturation in obese patients, touting its ability to provide advanced warning in the high risk patient population.

An abstract from the study, which Masimo claims is the first published research investigating the use of the index in the population, was presented at the Society for Technology in Anesthesia’s annual meeting in Miami, Fla.

The ORi is a relative indicator of oxygen reserve in the moderate hyperoxic region and serves as an index parameter with a scale between 0 and 1 that can be trended, with optional alarms to notify clinicians of changes in patient’s oxygen reserves, the Irvine, Calif.-based company said.

Data in the prospective, observational study was collected from 36 adult individuals with body mass indexes between 30 and 40 kg/m2 scheduled for elective surgical procedures which required general anesthesia and endotracheal intubation, Masimo said.

Patient ORi values were measured using the company’s Root monitoring platform, with time elapsed from the start of ORi alarming to 98% saturation recorded by researchers.

Results from the study indicated average time from start of ORi alarming to 98% saturday was between 5 and 255 seconds, and after excluding 2 outliers was between 5 and 107 seconds.

Researchers indicated that the study “demonstrates the ability of ORi to provide advanced warning of arterial desaturation as an adjunct to SpO2 in this high risk patient population.”

“This additional warning time can potentially translate to improved patient safety by allowing earlier calls for help, assistance from a more experienced person, or modification of airway management. For this analysis we defined the advance warning to end at 98% SpO2, with a defined trigger for intervention at 94% SpO2,” researchers wrote, according to a press release.

In a separate study performed at Dallas’ Children’s Medical Center, researches indicated that ORi provides clinicians with a median of 31.5 seconds of advanced warning of desaturation in pediatric patients with induced apnea after pre-oxygenation.

Earlier this month, Masimo said it won FDA clearance clearing its Rad-97 pulse CO-Oximeter for home use.
