Cook Group said today it broke ground on a new Bloomington, Ind.-based facility that could double the footprint of its headquarters in the city.

The company said it acquired the facility, which was a former General Electric (NYSE:GE) refrigerator manufacturing site, last year, and that it spans over one million square feet. The addition is set to create a campus between Cook’s headquarters and its new facilities, and is expected to add an additional 500 jobs over the next 10 years.

Plans include renovating the out-of-work plant into a medical device manufacturing facility, the company said.

“This building represents an important part of our company’s future. At the same time, we hope to make this project a part our community’s future too. Our vision is to take this property and turn it into something the community can be proud of, to spur future growth for our community, our company, our employees and their families,” Cook Group & Cook Medical prez Pete Yonkman said in a prepared statement.

Earlier this month, Cook Medical said it won the second of three bellwether cases brought against it alleging that its inferior vena cava filters designed to capture and contain blood clots were defective.
