BD preps Arizona relo for peripheral interventions biz, expands in Ireland

Becton Dickinson (NYSE:BDX) is expanding in Arizona and Ireland, with a planned relocation in Tempe and the opening of a new facility in Limerick.

New peripheral HQ to add 9% to Tempe workforce

Franklin Lakes, New Jersey-based BD is reportedly planning to move its peripheral interventions unit into a new, 185,000-square-foot site where construction is slated to break ground later this summer, according to the Phoenix Business Journal. If the move happens as expected in 2020, BD would be the first tenant in Tempe’s IDEA development, a planned 18-acre, 1 million-square-foot campus, the newspaper reported.

The company plans to add 50 workers to the 550 people it already employs in Tempe, with more hires likely after that, according to the paper.

“The cooperation we received from the city of Tempe, the ability to attract and retain a diverse, talented and qualified workforce in this area, confirmed our decision to stay in the area and expand our workforce,” HR VP David Cano said in prepared remarks.

“BD is helping us realize the concept of I.D.E.A. Tempe,” added Tempe mayor Mark Mitchell. “Our hope for the campus was to bring new jobs and new discoveries to our city. BD will do both.”

Irish facility is global R&D hub

BD put €21 million into a “center of excellence” in Limerick that will serve as its global R&D hub, according to Irish media reports. The company plans to hire another 85 workers for the site over the next year, after adding 100 since 2017, taking the total workforce in two Limerick facilities to 285.

“The opening of BD’s R&D centre of excellence in Limerick today marks a new era for BD and the life sciences community in Ireland. This new centre has been established to serve as a global R&D hub for our businesses and is key to our long-term strategic growth plans,” said Dennis Gilbert, SVP of R&D, according to the Irish Times.

“BD’s decision to open our global research centre here in Limerick is based on the region’s highly skilled talent, our strong relationships with local universities and Limerick’s stellar reputation as an important Life Sciences hub,” Gilbert added, Raidió Teilifís Éireann reported. “Announcing 85 additional new jobs today further strengthens our commitment to investing in Ireland, and we will be able to further accelerate our recruitment efforts here to continue to build on our expertise and capabilities.”

BD has had a presence on the Emerald Isle since 1964 and employs more than 1,300 people there at sites in Drogheda, County Louth and Dún Laoghaire, according to the Times.
