Medtronic launches Infinity OCT spinal system

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today it launched the Infinity occipitocervical-upper thoracic system intended for use in posterior cervical spine surgery in the US.

The Infinity OCT system is designed to be a complete procedural solution which integrates navigation and biologics with the Fridley, Minn.-based company’s devices and instrumentation for posterior cervical spinal surgery procedures.

“Some of our posterior cervical patients arrive in critical condition and their lives depend on our surgical skills and the performance of the tools we use to treat them. With Infinity, I can focus on delivering the best patient care during complex procedures knowing that every component was precisely-designed with modularity and versatility in mind. And an integrated procedural solution with Stealth navigation and Infinity was game-changing as a 3D-view of the anatomy allows me the precision to place pedicle screws with confidence and accuracy,” Dr. Greg Trost of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health said in a prepared statement.

The system is intended to immobilize and stabilize the spine while it fuses, and features a multi-axial screw with 60 degrees of angulation in any direction, a locking cap set screw with a quick-start thread and 3.0mm and 5.5mm screws to allow for use with expanded patient demographics and clinical applications.

Medtronic said that the newly launched system features a number of implant materials and sizes, and can be paired with the company’s O-arm imaging system and StealthStation navigation system. The system is indicated for conditions including degenerative disc disease, instability or deformity, tumors and traumatic spinal fractures or traumatic dislocations.

“For more than 35 years, Medtronic has partnered with leading spine surgeons to advance new technologies with the goal of improving patient outcomes. We engineered every component of the Infinity OCT System to perform efficiently during the most complex spine procedures, as well as to integrate seamlessly with our market-leading imaging and navigation technologies,” Medtronic spine division prez Doug King said in a press release.

The company said it plans to release the device in other locations globally during this and next year.

Earlier this week, Medtronic said that it inked an approximately $1.6 billion deal to acquire surgical robotics platform maker Mazor Robotics (NSDQ:MZOR).
