The product, an automated intravenous medication management system, using BD’s Cato medication workflow system and CareFusion’s SmartWorks platform. It’s designed to work with pharmacy IT systems to receive IV orders, detecting potential errors and lowering healthcare providers’ risk of exposure to hazardous drugs, the Murray Hill, N.J.-based company said.
Once the medication is prepared, it’s tracked by CareFusion’s Pyxis ES Link dispensing system. At the point of care, CareFusion’s Alaris drug infusion device links with the hospital’s EMR system. Refills can be ordered via the Pyxis ES Link, beginning the process anew, according to a press release.
BD said it debuted the new IV medication system at the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists’ meeting in New Orleans.
“Combining BD and CareFusion technologies creates a safer and more simplified way to manage IV medication at hospitals,” medication management solutions president Ranjeet Banerjee said in prepared remarks. “We will continue to integrate and innovate to develop medication management solutions that help clinicians deliver the safest and most efficient care.”
BD closed the $12.2 billion merger with CareFusion March 17 after European anti-trust regulators approved the deal.
