3. Sofinnova raises $325m for healthcare-focused fund

Life sciences focused venture capital firm Sofinnova Partners said yesterday it raised $325 million (EU €300 million) for a new fund focused on the healthcare industry, specifically biopharma and medical devices.

The fund brought in more than its initial target of $272 million (EU €250 million) and puts the total amount under Sofinnova’s management to $1.6 billion (EU €1.5 billion). Read more


2. UW to lead expansion of Medtronic’s HeartRescue program

Medtronic said today that the University of Washington will lead a U.S. expansion of its HeartRescue program, which aims to improve survival rates for sudden cardiac arrest.

Fridley, Minn.-based Medtronic launched HeartRescue in 2010 in 5 states, looking to train healthcare providers on resuscitation methods to boost the SCA survival rate, which has not moved in 30 years, the company said. In addition to charter states Arizona, Illinois, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Washington, Maryland, Utah and Michigan have also joined the initiative. Read more


1. Google renames life sciences biz to ‘Verily’

Google parent company Alphabet said yesterday that it renamed its life sciences division to ‘Verily’, presenting a mission of ‘understanding disease on an individual level’ with a focus on prevention and proactive solutions.
