RIP former Cardiovascular Systems CEO Martin

Cardiovascular Systems Inc.Former Cardiovascular Systems (NSDQ:CSII) CEO and medtech vet David Martin, 51, died May 1 after a battle with stomach cancer.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based company revealed his cancer diagnosis back in September. In February, Martin stepped down from the company to focus on his treatment.

“Dave guided our company on an extraordinary journey developing Orbital Atherectomy from an early stage innovation to a market leading product that has stabilized and improved the quality of life for thousands of patients living with peripheral and coronary artery disease. We remember Dave for his boundless enthusiasm, extraordinary sense of humor, and his passionate commitment to our technology and the patients we serve,” Interim CEO Scott Ward said during an earning conference all, according to SeekingAlpha. “We know that the Martin family is grateful to the love and support they have received and we certainly ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.”

Martin joined up with Cardiovascular Systems in 2006, rising to the chief executive position in 2007. He lead the company through the FDA approval of its Diamondback 360 device, the company’s flagship product designed to treat clogged heart arteries, and saw shares rise under his guidance.

Upon revealing his diagnosis in September, Martin seemed optimistic as to the company’s future.

“Our CSI mission is clear – to provide vascular relief throughout the body to millions in need and in doing so dramatically reduce the number of amputations performed every year. We have the pieces necessary to accomplish this goal in the U.S. and beyond, as we expand internationally,” Martin wrote to Cardiovascular Systems employees. “We are committed to patients in need and their families. Our medical education programs support our health care provider friends and heroes. We deliver confidence to insurance payors and to patients by providing clear proof of clinical and economic outcome benefits. Our technology provides unique, safe, and effective products for vascular intervention. Finally, CSI has outstanding talent and leadership. I’m proud of this special organization and what we’ve achieved. I am even more excited about the contributions we will make for many years to come.”
