5. BD puts Pyxis drug pump into the Internet of Things
Becton Dickinson said today that it adopted the Windows 10 Internet of Things operating system for its automated drug-dispensing Pyxis ES system. The new operating system features long-term support and improved cybersecurity.
The Windows 10 Internet of Things operating system boasts a 10-year support package and active security patches. It also offers new features and upgrades for the system every 2 to 3 years. Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based BD also said it is involved in early testing of the Windows Server 2016 and the SQL Server 2016 pre-releases with its Pyxis medication management technology. Read more
4. Japan approves Medtronic’s CoreValve Evolut R heart valve
Medtronic said today that it won reimbursement and Shonin approval from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor & Welfare for its CoreValve Evolut R transcatheter aortic valve replacement.
Fridley, Minn.-based Medtronic, which won pre-market approval from the FDA for the CoreValve Evolut R in June 2015, said the Japanese approvals include its Enveo R delivery system. Read more
3. FDA approves Cardiac Dimensions trial for Carillon mitral repair device
Cardiac Dimensions said today that the FDA granted an investigational device exemption for a pivotal trial of its Carillon mitral valve repair device.
Kirkland, Wash.-based Cardiac Dimensions said the 400-patient study will compare the device with guideline-directed treatment of symptomatic functional mitral regurgitation associated with heart failure after a year. Read more
2. Intuitive Surgical, J&J’s Ethicon bury the hatchet over sales rep’s non-compete
Intuitive Surgical and Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Ethicon agreed to bury the hatchet last month over a former Ethicon rep’s non-compete agreement, according to court documents.
Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Intuitive sued Ethicon in a California federal court in August, alleging that the J&J division was using “intricate legal gymnastics” to sidestep California’s restrictions on non-competes, aiming to prevent its employees from hiring on with Intuitive. Read more
1. U.S. House passes 21st Century Cures Act; Senate OK seen likely
The U.S. Senate is likely to approve the $6.3 billion 21st Century Cures Act next week after their counterparts in the U.S. House voted 392-26 yesterday to enact the sweeping healthcare legislation.
Supporters say the bill will spur medical innovation, speed access to new devices and drugs, expand access to mental health treatment and battle the opioid epidemic. Although the bill has widespread bipartisan support, including from the White House, critics say it gives massive handouts to the medical device and pharmaceutical industries and cuts public health programs and Medicare.
