Siemens Healthineers inks deal with N.Y. provider Northwell Health

Siemens HealthineersSiemens Healthineers (NYSE:SI) said today it inked a 4-year research deal with N.Y. state healthcare provider Northwell Health.

The 2 parties aim to develop research projects evaluating clinical effectiveness and outcomes using data analytics-based population health evidence. As part of the 4-year partnership deal, Siemens Healthineers will also provide full-time employees who will work jointly with Northwell Health.

“This partnership is first-of-its-kind for both Siemens Healthineers and Northwell Health to collaborate on research that could potentially define care pathways for various populations in the future. We are excited to bring to the partnership a long history of innovation excellence, and I know that in working closely with a top-ranking clinical and medical education institute like Northwell, the partnership will contribute great results to the healthcare marketplace. Agreements such as this are another milestone in our growth strategy of focusing on Enterprise and Digital Services and collaborating with customers to improve healthcare,” Siemens Healthineers NA senior VP of services August Calhoun said in prepared remarks.

The partnership has already produced an initial study evaluating the use of advanced imaging in acute stroke. Data from the study indicated that advanced imaging used during acute stroke care leads to improved long-term health outcomes.

Principal investigator Dr. Pina Sanelli noted that care should be personalized, and use of either computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging will vary by specific patient charateristics. Study researchers surggested that the findings are preliminary and will require further investigation.

“The Imaging Clinical Effectiveness and Outcomes Research Program at Northwell Health is dedicated to performing the highest quality health services research in order to improve patient care as well as to inform health policy decisions affecting population health. Northwell Health is committed to improving the health of the communities it serves. Our joint research initiative with Siemens Healthineers builds upon our organizations’ long-term relationship and will help us advance this critical mission,” Dr. Jason Naidich of the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine said in a prepared statement.

Yesterday, Siemens said that its U.S. CEO Eric Spiegel is retiring at the end of the year, with Lisa Davis slated to take the role of chair & CEO of the US-based Siemens Corporation, while Judith Marks will act as Siemens CEO U.S.

Both changes are slated to go into effect January 1, 2017, according to the company, and Marks will assume the CEO U.S. role in addition to her current position as exec VP at Siemens biz Dresser-Rand.
