5. Helius Medical touts data from multiple sclerosis pilot study of PONS system

Helius Medical Technologies said today that clinical data from a multiple sclerosis pilot study of its portable neuromodulation stimulator was published in the Multiple Sclerosis Journal: Experimental, Translational and Clinical.

The company’s PONS system is designed to treat neurological symptoms, caused by trauma or disease, non-invasively through the tongue. Read more


4. Abbott initiates recall of StarClose SE vascular closure system

Abbott said yesterday it initiated an urgent recall of its StarClose SE vascular closure system over issues associated with difficulty or failure to deploy during use.

The Chicago, Ill.-based company said that risks associated with the device include prolonged procedure times, the need to use another device or manual compression to avoid hemostasis. Read more


3. FDA warns on over-inflation, pancreatitis risks with ReShape, Apollo intragastric balloons

The FDA today warned of potential risks associated with fluid-filled intragastric balloons, produced by ReShape Medical and Apollo Endosurgery, which are used to treat obesity.

The federal watchdog said it has received multiple reports of 2 different types of adverse events associated with the balloons, including over-inflation requiring premature removal and the development of acute pancreatitis, also requiring premature device removal. Read more


2. Smith & Nephew misses the mark with 2016 results

Smith & Nephew today posted 2016 numbers that missed the consensus forecast, sending share prices down today in London and New York despite a net profit gain of more than 91%.

Europe’s largest large-joint implant maker reported 2016 trading profits of $1.02 billion, off by -7.2% compared with 2015, on 0.8% sales growth to $4.67 billion. Analysts were looking for trading profits of $1.04 billion on sales of $4.69 billion. Read more


1. Intuitive Surgical warns of risks on Obamacare repeal, NAFTA withdrawal, Brexit

Intuitive Surgical last week warned of the risks posed to its business by the geopolitical shifts of the past year, including the likely repeal of Obamacare, the U.S.’s threatened abrogation of the North American Free Trade Agreement and Great Britain’s pending exit from the European Union.

In its annual report filed Feb. 3, the robot-assisted surgery market’s leading player warned that a repeal of the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act, enacted in 2010, “could have a negative impact on the demand for our products.” Read more
