UM Baltimore, SurgiGyn ink licensing deal for laparoscopic hysterectomy device

Gynecological surgery device developer SurgiGyn said today it inked an exclusive license arrangement with the University of Maryland, Baltimore for laparoscopic surgical device technology developed at the University.

The Baltimore, Md.-based company said it also closed a seed round of funding from UM Ventures and a private investor, with funds slated to support accelerated development of its uterine electrosurgical device

“We continue to be impressed with SurgiGyn’s commitment to delivering transformative medical device innovations to women’s health. The team has already made tremendous progress with its minimally invasive surgical device for laparoscopic hysterectomy,” UM Ventures chief commercialization officer Phil Robilotto said in prepared remarks.

SurgiGyn’s UED device is designed to help facilitate precise, reproducible dissection of the uterine cervix during laparoscopic hysterectomies, the company said. The company is working with Harbor Designs to develop and manufacture the device, and is hopeful to launch a clinical study of the UED in the US this year.

“Hysterectomy is the second most common surgery among women. The UED is designed to significantly simplify minimally invasive hysterectomy procedures, providing a safe and more effective solution that improves patient outcomes and reduces surgical time,” co-founder & prez Dr. Roger Brecheen said in a press release.
