“The solution for Mexico to stop Donald from dumping on it is for them to buy Twitter. That’s innovation,” Abele said, passing along a joke from an unnamed friend.
Abele spoke about disruptive technology at the event, specifically referencing innovations made in the endovascular field. But his punchy jokes about today’s political climate stole the show.
The president’s stance on immigration ignited a strong response at the state level. Yesterday, 5 more states (including Boston Scientific’s home state of Massachusetts) joined Hawaii in a lawsuit challenging Trump’s revamped travel order halting refugee resettlement and travel from 6 majority-Muslim countries.
The attorneys general of Washington, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Hawaii and the Bay State argue that the executive order discriminates against Muslims and brings unnecessary harm to their state’s residents and businesses.
“[W]hile the President signed a revised version on March 6… we still know exactly what it means. It is another attempt by the administration to enact a discriminatory ban that goes against the fundamental teachings of our Constitution and our immigration laws, even if it is cloaked in ostensibly neutral terms,” Hawaii wrote in its filing to a federal court in Honolulu.
A hearing is set for March 15 to review Hawaii’s request for a national temporary restraining order on Trump’s travel order. The order is scheduled to take effect the next day.
The administration has defended the order, saying that it will screen out visitors from countries affected by violent terrorism until more extreme vetting measures are put in place.
