J&J’s Ethicon, DePuy Synthes launch orthopedic wound closure kits

Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ)’s Ethicon and DePuy Synthes said today they are launching customized wound closure kits designed for orthopedic surgery in the US.

The newly-launched kits include Ethicon’s Stratafix knotless tissue control devices and Dermabond Prineo skin closure system, which Somerville, N.J.-based Johnson & Johnson said allow for better customization during orthopedic procedures.

The wound closure kits allow operating orthopedic surgeons to choose which sutures they’d like by each layer of closure, and help physicians achieve greater procedural efficiencies during wound closure.

“DePuy Synthes’ extensive reach in the orthopaedics space will enable us to bring the benefits of Ethicon’s advanced wound closure products to many more health systems and sites of care. The launch of our wound closure kit demonstrates just one of the new ways we are partnering across our medical devices businesses to provide efficient capabilities that streamline procedures, and may lead to better outcomes for the millions of patients who undergo surgery each year,” J&J med device companies NA region group chair Gary Fischetti said in a prepared statement.

Earlier this month, Ethicon said it was going ahead with the launch of its Enseal X1 instrument, despite an ongoing dispute with its longtime rival in the surgical cutting and sealing market, Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) subsidiary Covidien.

Late last year, Ethicon asked a federal judge in Massachusetts to find that the Enseal X1 doesn’t infringe a quintet of patents owned by Covidien that cover its competing Ligasure device.
