Toshiba Medical to provide Vantage Galan 3T MRI for UCI study

Canon‘s (NYSE:CAJ) Toshiba Medical subsidiary said today that its Vantage Galan 3T magnetic resonance imaging machine will be used at the University of California, Irvine in a study,

The study aims to investigate the use of non-contrast MRI to examine cerebral microbleeds in high school football players and other patients as early signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The trial will enroll 100 football player subjects and 50 control subjects.

“We designed the Vantage Galan 3T to make highly advanced 3T imaging accessible to more healthcare providers. This study provides a fascinating look at how, from the most complex research settings to the most complicated clinical situations, Toshiba Medical’s imaging innovations are helping clinicians support fast, effective patient care to prioritize clinical outcomes,” clinical collaborations director Eugene Mensah said in prepared remarks.

“Young athletes competing in high-impact activities face many potential risks of head injury, but Toshiba Medical’s Galan 3T MR system may enable us to identify these risks and make greater strides in our understanding and treatment of early head trauma. We are very excited at the prospect of marrying health care and technology to provide better treatment for athletes today and improved preventative care in the years to come,” study lead researcher Dr. Mark Fisher of UCI said in a prepared statement.

Toshiba Medical said it is also providing the Vantage Galan 3T to UCI for a study that will image the cervical spine to screen for early neck injury.

On Monday, Toshiba Medical said it is launching the PM Only Service Agreement preventive maintenance program designed to maintain imaging equipment for healthcare providers.

The new service from Toshiba Medical is designed to enable providers to fulfill and document that they are complaint with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Directive and The Joint Commission guidelines that imaging equipment meets manufacturer’s specifications, the company said.
