HeartFlow said today it won a new set of category III Current Procedural Terminology codes from the American medical Association for its FFRct fractional flow reserve technology.
The newly won CPT code application was submitted by the American College of Cardiology, the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, the Redwood City, Calif.-based company said.
HeartFlow said the new codes show that the company’s FFRct “is a unique and distinct analysis that provides important and actionable clinical information above and beyond that of a coronary CT angiogram.” CPT codes are widely used by government payers including Medicare and Medicaid, as well as private health plans, in reimbursement descriptions.
“This favorable decision is a testament to how industry and medical societies can successfully collaborate to advance new technologies to benefit patients. This unique set of CPT codes represents a major reimbursement milestone as physicians and hospitals across the country now will be able to submit claims directly related to our service, avoiding the challenging process associated with the use of unlisted codes. Ultimately, these new codes will provide many more patients with access to HeartFlow FFRct, including potentially millions of Medicare patients,” CEO Dr. John Stevens said in a prepared statement.
Last month, HeartFlow said it won a positive healthcare evidence review from Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Evidence Street for its HeartFlow FFRct technology.
In the review, BCBS’s Evidence Street determined that the FFRct technology “provides a meaningful improvement in net health outcome when used to guide the care of patients with stable chest pain who are at immediate risk of CAD and are being considered for invasive coronary angiography,” according to a press release.
