Apollo Endosurgery touts 20-year Lap-Band data

Apollo Endosurgery today released 20-year outcomes data from its Lap-Band system, touting it as a safe and effective procedure which results in sustained, medically relevant weight loss.

Outcomes data was presented at the 22nd World Congress of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders in London.

Data came from follow-ups with 8,263 gastric banding patients treated between Sept. 1994 and June 2017 at Melbourne, Australia’s Centre for Bariatric Surgery, with an overall follow-up rate of 58%. Results indicated total average weight loss of 59.3 lbs, representing 48.2% of excess weight.

“The Lap-Band is a safe and effective procedure achieving substantial weight loss that can be maintained for at least twenty years. The surgery is simple and can be reversed or corrected easily, but must be technically correct and patients must be managed properly,” study presenter Dr. Paul O’Brien of the Centre for Bariatric Surgery said in a prepared statement.

Overall explant rate was reported at 7.9% for the entire population, with a rate of 4.6% for procedures performed between 2006 and 2017 with a newer version of the device. No mortalities were reported in all cases, including primary and re-operation procedures.

“We congratulate Dr. O’Brien and his colleagues on the great results they have delivered to patients by using the Lap-Band system for over two decades. These results demonstrate the kind of long-term results that Lap-Band can provide patients in the hands of a bariatric surgeon who is dedicated to long-term patient relationships, treatment and aftercare guidelines. Dr. O’Brien and his colleagues at CBS epitomize this kind of surgeon,” CEO Todd Newton said in a press release.

Yesterday, Apollo Endosurgery said it won an expanded CE Mark approval for its Orbera weight loss system, extending the indwell period of the gastric balloon from 6 months to a 12 month treatment period.
