Healthcare networks and infrastructures are increasingly serving as the targets of hackers, according to a new report from cybersecurity firm TrapX Security.
In a new report, the firm claims to have developed a fake healthcare provider network and distributed access credentials across the Darknet market, seeking to draw intruders to gain more information on how and why they target healthcare networks.
The firm noted a number of discoveries from the operation, including a broad penetration of actors into the network and the implementation of medical device hijacking as intruders sought to compromise both patient safety and data.
TrapX also obtained data on how healthcare information is traded across the Darknet, and on various attacks specifically targeting US hospitals, according to the report.
Last December, emails were identified as a top source of data breaches for 2017, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.
A total of 73 breaches were reported between January 1 and November 30, affecting information related to 573,698 individuals, according to the report.
