Google partners with AMA to launch mobile health interoperability and innovation challenge

The American Medical Association said today it is partnering with Google (NSDQ:GOOG) to launch the AMA Health Care Interoperability and Innovation Challenge designed to support mobile health technology that improves monitoring and care in the management of chronic diseases.

In the challenge, participants will present mobile solutions that aim to improve the capturing and transmission of patient-generated data, and the transformation of that data into actionable information for the patient and physicians, the AMA said.

Entrants into the challenge will be asked to present ideas on how to import patient-generated health data from mobile devices or mobile application into one or more phases of clinical care, and on ideas on how to extract data from one or more phases of clinical care to be sent back to the application or device to be monitored.

A total of three winning ideas will be chosen to receive $50,000 in credits for Google Cloud, the AMA said. Submissions are required to be made by June 7.

“The AMA is working to unleash a new era of patient care through its Integrated Health Model Initiative by pioneering a common data model for organizing and sharing meaningful health data like patient goal, state and functioning, and assembling an unprecedented collaborative effort across health care and technology stakeholders. The challenge we’re announcing today is an extension of the AMA’s work and will explore possible uses of mobile health technology to provide patients and physicians with a rich stream of medical data that is important for improving care and long-term wellness,” AMA prez Dr. David Barbe said in a prepared statement.

Last month, Google announced plans to push its Cloud services further into the healthcare field, aiming to enable data sharing and collaboration between healthcare providers and patients.
