7 medtech stories we missed this week: August 3, 2018

From Esaote launching its new ultrasound device to Nipro’s Infraredx launching in Japan, here are seven medtech stories we missed this week but thought were still worth mentioning.

1. Esaote launches new ultrasound devices

Esaote announced in an Aug. 2 press release that it has launched its new MyLab X7, MyLab X6 and MyLab X5 ultrasound systems. The MyLab X7 offers faster and more reliable ultrasounds with intuitive usability and ergonomics. MyLab X5 has zero-click automatic that speeds up assessments and enhances image quality.

2. Bonesupport inks deal with MTF Biologics

Bonesupport and MTF Biologics have signed an agreement to extend and strengthen Bonesupport’s product offerings in the U.S., according to an Aug. 2 press release. Bonesupport will receive rights to two forms of bone graft materials that are made from 100% demineralized bone matrix. The products supplied by MTF Biologics will be launched under the Bonesupport name through its own U.S. distribution network.

3. Canada approves Mindshare Medical’s lung cancer diagnosis software

Mindshare Medical announced in an Aug. 2 press release that it has received Health Canada approval for its RevealAI-Lung product. The product is a computer-assisted diagnostic software program for lung cancer diagnosis. It helps clinicians improve diagnostic efficacy while optimizing recommendations for follow-up. The technology uses a radiomics approach that generates a malignancy similarity index that has hundreds of characteristics from the CT that are combined into a morphological biomarker of malignancy. The biomarker can then be used to compare the nodule being diagnosed with nodules in the company’s reference database with known diagnostics and outcomes.

4. ivWatch wins nod from Health Canada

ivWatch recently received a medical device license from Health Canada, according to an Aug. 2 press release. The license allows the company to sell the ivWatch Model 400 to Canadian healthcare organizations. The ivWatch Model offers monitored IV solutions to minimize the risks that come with adverse IV events.

5. Hoya’s Pentax Medical buys PlasmaBiotics

Pentax Medical announced in an Aug. 2 press release that it has bought majority interest in PlasmaBiotics. The financial details of the deal were not disclosed. PlasmaBiotics designs, manufactures and markets device for drying and storage of endoscopes. The business acquisition will help Pentax Medical expand its hygiene portfolio while improving its focus on reducing cross-contamination risks for better patient safety in endoscopy.

6. Modulated Imaging wins FDA nod

Modulated Imaging has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Clarifi Imaging System, according to a July 31 press release. The device is a diagnostic medical device that uses SFDI to help clinicians assess tissue function and compromised circulation by measuring oxygenation and hemoglobin levels in superficial tissue. The information from the device can be used to assess, manage and treat different challenging conditions like peripheral vascular diseases, diabetic foot ulcers, burns, skin flaps and chronic wounds.

7. Nipro’s Infraredx launches in Japan

Infraredx announced in a July 31 press release that it has launched its Makoto Intravascular Imaging System and Dualpro intravascular ultrasound and near-infrared spectroscopy catheter in Japan. The Makoto Intravascular Imaging System and Dualpro catheter identify vessel structure and plaque composition using IVUS+NIRS. The Dualpro catheter emits and processes a broad band of frequencies. The data collected from the two devices is translated into a Chemogram to help differentiate between stable plaque and dangerous LCP.
