3. Wright and Tornier shareholders approve merger

Wright Medical and Tornier said that both companies’ shareholders approved the $3.3 billion merger of the 2 orthopedic giants.

Tornier is slated to take Wright Medical’s name in the merger, and both companies will appoint a combined board of directors, the companies said. Read more


2. Lawsuit accuses J&J, hospital, doc of unauthorized ceramic-on-metal hip trials

A purported class action lawsuit accuses a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, a California hospital and an orthopedic surgeon of conducting unauthorized clinical trials without patients’ consent and alleges that the lead plaintiff was implanted with a group of unapproved hip implant components.

The June 17 lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for Northern California, stems from the group of ceramic-on-metal hip components made by J&J subsidiary DePuy Orthopaedics that were implanted in John Muldoon in 2007. After years of alleged pain and discomfort, Muldoon had revision surgery in 2014, replacing the ceramic-on-metal device with a ceramic-on-plastic hip. Muldoon alleges that, although all the components won individual 510(k) clearances, they were never approved for use as a group. Read more


1. Medtronic puts up $93m for CardioInsight

MassDevice.com news

Medtronic said that it paid $93 million for CardioInsight Technologies and its heart-mapping technology.

Cleveland-based CardioInsight makes the ECVue, a non-invasive electrocardiographic mapping device that uses body surface electrical data and anatomical data to reconstruct and display 3-D maps and “other useful measures” of the heart’s electrical activity, Medtronic said. Read more
