5. DoD re-ups Philips contract for $77m
Royal Philips won a maximum $77 million modification from the U.S. Defense Dept. for the 7th year of a possible 9-year contract for patient monitoring systems, subsystems, accessories, consumables, spare or repair parts and training. Read more
4. Intuitive Surgical touts cost study on robot-assisted prostate surgery
Intuitive Surgical is touting a study comparing the cost of prostate surgery using its da Vinci robot-assisted surgery device with traditional open procedures. The results showed that the robot-assisted surgery delivered shorter hospital stays, lower complication rates and faster returns to work compared with open procedures. Read more
3. Glaukos wins Japanese nod for iStent glaucoma device
Glaukos said today that the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor & Welfare approved its iStent device for treating glaucoma. Laguna Hills, Calif.-based Glaukos said the approval covers use of the iStent in conjunction with cataract surgery, making it the 1st within-the-eye micro-invasive glaucoma surgery device to hit the market in Japan.
