4. U.S. Homeland Security Dept. warns on cybersecurity risk with BD subsidiary CareFusion’s Pyxis

The U.S. Homeland Security Dept. warned about more than 1,400 cybersecurity flaws found in in 3rd-party software used with the Pyxis SupplyStation automated drug dispensing cabinet made by Becton Dickinson & Co. subsidiary CareFusion.

The flaws, uncovered by independent researchers Billy Rios and Mike Ahmadi in collaboration with CareFusion, could be exploited remotely and are publicly available, according to the national security agency’s Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team. Read more


3. Titan Medical closes $12m offering

Titan Medical said it grossed about $11.5 million (C$15.1 million) in a public offering of shares and warrants that closed yesterday.

The Toronto-based robot-assisted surgery company said it sold nearly 15.1 million unit at 76¢ (C$1) apiece. Each unit consisted of a common share and a 5-year warrant priced at 92¢ (C$1.20). The offering included the sale of 191,000 units to a company insider, Titan said. Read more


2. Medtronic launches CoreValve Evolut R trial in low-risk patients

Medtronic said yesterday that it launched another clinical trial for its CoreValve Evolut R replacement heart valve, aiming to win an expanded indication for low-risk patients.

The 1,200-patient trial is designed for patients with less than 3% risk of dying from open valve surgery, randomized to either transcatheter aortic valve replacement with the CoreValve device or surgical aortic valve replacement. It’s the 3rd trial for Medtronic’s TAVR offering since February, when the FDA approved the new investigational device exemption study. Read more


1. Cardiovascular Systems to lay off 8%, reports preliminary Q3 sales beat

Cardiovascular Systems said yesterday that it’s planning to lay of 8% of its workforce even as it reported preliminary fiscal 3rd-quarter sales numbers that beat both its own forecast and the consensus expectation on Wall Street.

The company said it expects to post sales of $43.5 million to $44 million for the 3 months ended yesterday, roughly 4% to5% above its prior guidance of $40.5 million to $42 million and well ahead of The Street’s $41 million forecast. Read more
