Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) subsidiary Ethicon said today it launched its high-precision Harmonic HD 1000i surgical shears, which are designed for procedures involving complex thoracic, hepato-pancreato-billary, colorectal and gynecologic oncology.
The Cincinnati-based company’s touted the device’s dissection, transection, and sealing capabilities as being able to replace a number of other devices used in open and laparoscopic surgery. The Harmonic HD 1000i has a tapered jaw to enable more precise access to tissue planes and a shape that mimics a mechanical dissector. Ethicon said the product has significant sealing strength, evidenced by burst pressures of 150% relative to small and large jaw devices.
“At Ethicon, we challenged ourselves to identify the unmet needs of our customers by speaking with surgeons to understand their concerns in performing complex surgical procedures including oncology. Today, we are proud to launch a unique device that will help improve the clinical outcomes of patients, while enabling procedural efficiencies that can benefit the health system,” prez Andrew Ekdahl said in prepared remarks. “Harmonic HD 1000i is the latest example of our commitment to developing meaningful innovations that reach more patients and restore more lives.”
Ethicon won FDA approval for the shears in July 2016. Last month, the company won FDA 510(k) clearance for its Enseal X1 large jaw tissue sealer designed for vessel sealing and precise heat management.
