5. J&J and Google’s Verb Surgical looks to define, lift robotic surgery

Robotic surgery units available on the market right now are not technically “robots,” according to Johnson & Johnson worldwide medical devices chairman Gary Pruden.

But Verb Surgical, J&J’s joint venture with Google parent Alphabet‘s Verily Life Sciences, will be looking to produce a system that is truly robotic, and that will help improve surgical outcomes worldwide. Read more


4. Gold nanoparticles hold promise for pancreatic cancer treatment

Gold nanoparticles could be an important part of developing a treatment for pancreatic cancer, according to new research published yesterday in the journal ACS Nano.

Previous work has demonstrated that gold nanoparticles can be an effective vehicle to carry chemotherapy drugs into tumors. They can also act as a target to enhance the impact of radiation on tumors. New studies by lead researcher Priyabrata Mukherjee, who has shown that the nanoparticles can limit tumor growth and curb metastasis in a model of ovarian cancer in mice, shows that the nanoparticles can effectively disrupt tumor formation in mouse models of pancreatic cancer. Read more


3. LimFlow taps Rose for CEO

LimFlow said this week that it tapped former Direct Flow Medical VP and GM Daniel Rose as its new chief executive, with former co-founder & CEO Timothy Lenihan transitioning to chief technology officer.

2. Report: Trump would repeal medical device tax, Clinton noncommital

If Donald Trump wins the presidential election next month, his administration would reportedly repeal the medical device tax, former Health & Human Services Dept. secretary Tommy Thompson said this week at the annual AdvaMed conference in Minneapolis.

A representative from the campaign of Trump opponent Hilary Clinton, Aneesh Chopra, said Clinton doesn’t have a comment 1 way or the other but “has a long history of negotiating with Congress to move her priorities forward, and everything will be considered while she and her transition team determine how to pass healthcare legislation in 2017 and beyond,” Bloomberg BNA reported. Read more


1. J&J ends porcine sales training demo after PETA protest

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals today won their campaign to end sales training demonstrations using pigs at Johnson & Johnson.

The animal rights organization sent a letter to the New Brunswick, N.J.-based company, urging it to put a stop to the use of animals for sales training and instead use non-animal methods such as a simulation. Read more
