Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today that its MiniMed Connect app, which allows patients with diabetes to see a real-time glucose measurement on their smartphone, is available for Android devices.
The app, which launched in September 2015, connects providers and patients with their continuous glucose monitoring data on any Internet-connected device or PC. Healthcare providers can use the app to access data for therapy optimization and patient monitoring.
The MiniMed Connect app is compatible with both the MiniMed 530G system and the MiniMed Revel system.
A retrospective analysis of data for 2,800 patients using the MiniMed Connect app demonstrated improved glycemic patterns. Using the app resulted in 2 fewer severe low blood sugar events and 41% fewer high blood sugar events per year. The app also helped 66% of patients stay within their recommended blood sugar range more often than those who did not use the app.
“In addition to greater convenience, our recent data shows that with easier and better access to their data, the MiniMed Connect app helps patients reduce high and low sugar events, and keep their sugar within range more often,” diabetes service & solutions president Annette Brüls said in prepared remarks. “Making the MiniMed Connect app available for Android users, their loved ones and their care partners propels us forward in our goal to meet both the diabetes management and lifestyle needs of people with diabetes so they can live with greater freedom and better health.”
“For individuals with diabetes, the need to constantly monitor sugar levels can be cumbersome and far from discreet,” added Samsung’s chief medical officer & head of healthcare and fitness, Dr. David Rhew. “Working with Medtronic, we are harnessing the power of industry leading mobile technology to make diabetes management less stressful and more seamless for the millions of Americans living with the condition. Samsung is thrilled to partner with Medtronic to launch the first-of-its-kind MiniMed Connect application on Android, which has been tested and approved for use on many of Samsung’s flagship smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.”
