Apple to launch Health Records eHR mobile app in U.S. Veterans Affairs deal

US Dept. of Veterans Affairs, Apple

Apple (NSDQ:AAPL) said yesterday that it is preparing to launch its new Health Records mobile electronic health records feature for U.S. Veterans as part of a partnership with the U.S. Veteran’s Health Administration.

With the launch, veterans will be able to view their aggregated health records directly through the iHealth application on their iPhone devices, the tech giant said.

Health record data will include allergies, conditions, immunizations, lab results, medications, procedures and vitals and will be displayed alongside other data, including fitness and active monitoring data from connected devices, the company said.

The files will be encrypted and protected through the use of the device’s passcode, Touch ID or Face ID biometric security verification, Apple said.

“We have great admiration for veterans, and we’re proud to bring a solution like Health Records on iPhone to the veteran community. It’s truly an honor to contribute to the improved healthcare of America’s heroes,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press release.

“When patients have better access to their health information, they have more productive conversations with their physicians. By bringing Health Records on iPhone to VA patients, we hope veterans will experience improved healthcare that will enhance their lives,” Apple COO Jeff Williams said in a prepared statement.

The Health Records launch marks the first mobile record-sharing platform available to the VA, Apple said.

The VA has not yet officially commented on the launch, and has not said whether it has any deals to develop a similar system for other smartphone platforms.

Last June, Apple opened up its Health Records application to developers, allowing digital health companies to use electronic health record data to power applications on Apple’s iOS devices.
