Neural Analytics lands $3M NIH grant

Neural Analytics lands $3M NIH grantNeural Analytics landed a $3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for the diagnostic and monitoring technology it’s developing for traumatic brain injury and stroke, the company reported. The NIH’s Small Business Innovation Research program funded the grant.

Los Angeles-based Neural Analytics, founded in 2013, develops technology to measure and track brain health, particularly traumatic brain injury, acute ischemic stroke, and dementia. The company is working on a portable ultrasound headset for athletes at risk of concussion.

With the NIH funding, they hope to create a portable device for 1st responders that can precisely diagnose traumatic brain injury and stroke. They argue that without a device to produce objective, physiological measurements of neural disorders, 1st responders can inadvertently delay treatment for patients.

“We are honored to receive this NIH grant, which will allow us to accelerate the development of our technology to detect traumatic brain injury and stroke as early as possible,” CEO Leo Petrossian said in prepared remarks. “Neural Analytics is committed to bringing urgently needed portable diagnostic tools to clinicians in order to help expedite care for the millions of patients who suffer from these neurovascular conditions each year.”

“We need a portable tool to effectively look inside the brain and determine the extent of disease to help us significantly advance brain health in the 21st century,” added Dr. Neil Martin of the University of California-Los Angeles. “When approved by the FDA, these types of portable devices will revolutionize medical care by assisting physicians and first responders to quickly evaluate brain health and expedite treatment for many patients.”
