Large joint procedure volumes rose 6% last year in US registry

The volume of large-joint replacement procedures in the U.S. rose more than 6% last year compared with 2014, according to the American Joint Replacement Registry.

There were 161,040 hip and knee procedures in 2015, according to the AJRR’s annual report, a 6.2% increase over the prior year. That included nearly 236,000 primary knee operations (55.2%) and more than 150,000 primary hip procedures (35.2%). There were more than 22,000 revision knee procedures (5.2%) and more than 17,000 revision hip operations (4.0%), according to the report. The registry’s 416 hospitals reported more than 1,700 hip resurfacing procedures (0.4%).

“The AJRR currently has over half a million procedures in the registry,” AJRR chairman Dr. Daniel Berry said in prepared remarks. “As the field of healthcare changes and expands from surveillance to surveillance and reporting quality, the National Registry needs to do the same. Our data collection and reporting will continue to advance, offering surgeons and researchers a comprehensive means to improve orthopedic care through data.”

The report also broke out revision burden scores for each type of procedure, representing the percentage of revisions for each. The 17,180 hip revisions last year amounted to an overall revision burden of 10.2% for hips, the AJRR said. There were 22,403 revision procedures in knee arthroplasties, for a knee revision burden of 8.7%.

“While there was slight variability from year to year, these numbers were relatively constant [from 2012 to 2015] for hips (9.9% to 10.4%) with minor variation for knees (7.2% to 9.4%),” according to the report.
