5. BD, JDRF ink deal for extended wear insulin delivery device

Becton Dickinson said today that it inked a research collaboration supported by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to develop an extended-wear insulin delivery device.

The collaboration is a 2-year funding commitment from JDRF to extend the lifetime of insulin infusion-delivery devices. Insulin infusion sets are cleared by the FDA for up to 3 days of use. JDRF will support Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based BD in addressing the mechanical-material and biological issues that contribute to the limited lifetime and design devices that enable infusion sets to be effective for an extended period of time. Read more


4. ReVision Optics raises $32m for Raindrop nearsightedness inlay

ReVision Optics said today that it raised $32 million in an equity round to back the commercialization of its Raindrop near-vision inlay.

Existing backers Canaan Partners, Domain Associates, InterWest Partners and ProQuest Investments also participated in the round, Lake Forest, Calif.-based ReVision said. Read more


3. Appeals court sends NuVasive spat with Medtronic back to patent office

The long-running patent war between Medtronic and NuVasive Inc. is due for another battle after a federal appeals court yesterday ordered the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office to reconsider its decision on 1 patent.

Medtronic filed petitions for inter pares review with the PTO, with a single challenge moving forward, according to court documents. NuVasive appealed the review, claiming it “did not receive adequate notice of or opportunity to address” the reading of the patent. Read more


2. Intuity Medical raises $40m for Pogo glucose meter

Intuity Medical said today that it raised $40 million in a Series C round for its Pogo 1-step blood glucose meter.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Intuity said the round was led by PTV Healthcare Capital and included affiliates of Luther King Capital Management, both new investors, and existing backers Accuitive Medical Ventures, Investor Growth Capital, U.S. Venture Partners, Venrock and Versant Ventures. Read more


1. Medtronic targets Medicare bundled payments with knee replacement offering

MassDevice.com news

Medtronic said today that it’s getting into the large joint replacement business, aiming to capitalize on a new bundled payment program at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The government insurer announced its 5-year “Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement” program in July 2015, saying it would involve more than 800 hospitals in 75 geographic areas. The CJR program, which went into effect in January, bundles payments for hip and knee replacements from hospital admission to 90 days after discharge. The payment covers “all related items and services paid under Medicare Part A and Part B for all Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries,” CMS said at the time. Read more
