Trump administration fires Surgeon General Mathy

Capitol Hill

US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has been fired by the Trump administration, according to a report from The Hill.

Murthy, an Obama appointee that has served as US Surgeon General since 2014, will be temporarily replaced by Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams, who currently serves as deputy Surgeon General.

“Today, Dr. Murthy, the leader of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, was asked to resign from his duties as Surgeon General after assisting in a smooth transition into the new Trump administration. Dr. Murthy has been relieved of his duties as Surgeon General and will continue to serve as a member of the Commissioned Corps,” the Trump administration said in a published statement, according to The Hill.

The fast departure was a surprise to employees at the Department of Health and Human Services, according to The New York Times.

Murthy faced a significant amount of opposition from the NRA after stating his beliefs that gun violence is a public health issue, with the issue stalling his nomination in the Senate for more than a year.
