Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) subsidiary Ethicon today released the results from 2 economic analysis of its Dermabond Prineo skin closure system, touting improved patient outcomes and lower healthcare costs.
The Dermabond Prineo skin closure system combines topical skin adhesive with a self-adhering patch, the company said.
Data from the economic analyses of the system were presented at the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research’s 22nd annual international meeting this week.
The 1st study compared economic and clinical outcomes between the use of the Dermabond Prineo system and skin staples for patients undergoing knee replacement surgeries.
Data indicated that the use of the Dermabond Prineo system was associated with a reduction in readmission at 30, 60 and 90 days, as well as a reduction in hospital stay length and a lower probability of being discharged to a skilled nursing facility. Costs of 30 day readmissions for TKA were estimated to be $12,839, while the use of the Dermabond Prineo system was associated with a 12% reduction in hospital stay length and 31% reduction in discharge to SNF or a non-home setting.
In a 2nd study, which compared the use of the Dermabond Prineo system against standard care in hip and knee arthroplasty procedures reported estimated cost savings of between $28,349 and $39,809 when assuming 500 arthroplasty procedures.
“Ethicon is committed to bringing to market innovative products that are designed to provide improved outcomes for patients and enable our customers to provide the best care for their patients. The Dermabond Prineo System has been shown by this research to be an excellent approach to wound closure,” global wound closure & repair platform leader Nefertiti Greene said in a press release.
In March, Ethicon and DePuy Synthes launched customized wound closure kits designed for orthopedic surgery in the US. The kits include Ethicon’s Stratafix knotless tissue control devices and Dermabond Prineo skin closure system, which Somerville, N.J.-based Johnson & Johnson said allow for better customization during orthopedic procedures.
