Google’s DeepMind Health AI biz inks another deal with UK NHS Trust

Google DeepMind Health

Google‘s (NSDQ:GOOG) DeepMind Health AI division said this week it inked a deal with the UK’S Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust to implement its physician and nurse focused mobile alert application, Streams, over the next 5 years.

The Streams application is designed to provide physicians with timely information about patients with acute kidney failure, including blood test data and other info required to make important care decisions. The mobile application aims to keep physicians and nurses attention focused on patients who need attention most immediately, the company said.

The application will also provide relevant information, including x-rays, scans and blood tests, according to an NHS release.

Streams will be rolled out across the Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust’s hospitals, with an initial rollout at the Musgrove Park Hospital, according to a DeepMind press release.

“Nurses and doctors already using Streams are telling us that it is helping them deliver faster and better care for their patients. The Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is well known for its pioneering approach to healthcare technology, so it’s incredibly exciting to be working with the outstanding clinical team there, on the shared goal of improving outcomes for patients,” DeepMind Health clinical lead Dr Dominic King said in a press release.

The deal is the 2nd for the company and the NHS, and is the 1st that will position it’s Streams technology outside of London.

“This is all about early detection of seriously unwell patients so that we can immediately escalate care, ensure a very rapid response, and make sure they are treated quickly by the right specialist doctor. In this way we can make more of a difference, more quickly,” Musgrove Park Hospital medicine consultant Dr Luke Gompels said in a press release.

DeepMind has faced some heat from the press and the UK’s government after a New Scientist article last year revealed that the initial deal would give Google access to a wealth of patient data without patient consent, according to a MobiHealthNews report.
