Through the program, the Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based company said it will actively participate with government agencies, industry associations and security researchers. The company will also collaborate with UL and ANSI UL 2900 cybersecurity standards and create a cybersecurity vendor certification program where BD verifies third-party security technologies.
“Intelligent and connected medical technologies have transformed how health care providers diagnose and treat patients. As cyber attacks become more sophisticated and attempt to find vulnerabilities through an interconnected health system, medical technology companies, health care providers and government agencies need to collaborate even more to protect patients,” BD product security director Rob Suarez said in a prepared statement.
As part of the program, BD will participate in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s secure wireless infusion pump program, contribute to the Health Care Industry Cybersecurity Task Force and coordinate for complete disclosure to the FDA and National Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center.
The company said it will be using ANSI UL 2900 as part of it design and development looking to reduce risks and exploitation through malware and increase security controls while expanding security awareness. BD said it has volunteered to cooperate in the UL’s Cybersecurity Cooperative Research and Development Agreement program which aims to improve national cybersecurity.
Becton Dickinson said its third-party cybersecurity certification program will include rigorous evaluations of technology to confirm compatibility and appropriate performance. Initial members of the certification program include Attivo Networks and Cylance, the company said.

In late November, BD announced another extension to its tender offer for up to $1.1 billion in outstanding C. R. Bard (NYSE:BCR) notes, pushing the deadline back from November 28 to December 14.
