Brainlab, Varian Medical ink interoperability deal

Varian Medical, Brainlab

Brainlab said yesterday it inked a deal with Varian Medical (NYSE:VAR) looking to support interoperability between Brainlab’s ExacTrac and Varian’s Clinac platform, TrueBeam and Edge systems.

As part of the deal, the companies will engage in joint testing, verification and validation to support interoperability between the systems, Munich-based Brainlab said. Brainlab added that it has worked with Varian since 1996, and that its new agreement is a “natural progression of the relationship between the two companies.”

“We are excited about growing the install base of around 1,000 ExacTrac systems for IGRT. After working with Varian for 20 years this step will intensify our collaboration, resulting in enhanced safety and interoperability for the benefit of patients,” Brainlab prez & CEO Stefan Vilsmeier said in a press release.

Brainlab’s ExacTrac is an in-room based X-ray positioning and monitoring system designed to detect intra-fractional motion of internal anatomy during treatment delivery, the company said.

“We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Brainlab by offering our customers more options for patient positioning and ensuring interoperability between ExacTrac and Edge systems,” Varian oncology systems biz prez Kolleen Kennedy said in a prepared statement.

Last December, Elekta (STO:EKTA B) said it inked an exclusive deal with Brainlab to make it the authorized distributor of Elekta’s stereotactic neurosurgery solutions.
